Pregnancy Style for the Busy Moms

Pregnancy is one of those times when it can be hard to style your body. Not only are you physically feeling not your best, but your body can also start feeling a little foreign as well. Plus, if you already have little ones- you don’t really have the luxury of time to figure out which outfits look just right and which ones don’t.

Below I’ve shared a few of the tips that I’ve used to keep myself looking put together with little effort but maximum results over 4 pregnancies. I do want to point out that while these tips worked for me, they may not work for you and your body. However, I hope this is a good starting point for you to start thinking about different ways to change your style as you’re growing a little human in your body.

1- Go for Comfortable Fabrics

I know this is probably not breaking news, but I found one of the most important things throughout my four pregnancies were comfortable fabrics. My trifecta of awesome fabrics, including things that were breathable, lightweight and easy to move in. This is especially true during the summer months when it’s already hot outside here in Dallas, and I desperately needed fabrics that didn’t make me feel like I was suffocating. Lightweight woven cotton, muslin and linen were some of the fabrics that worked really well for me.

2- Buy Few, Buy Neutral

Pregnancy only lasts 9 months and our size changes throughout. It’s hard to spend a fortune on clothes you’re only going to wear for a few months before returning to your normal wardrobe.

One thing I found that was really helpful was buying a few good neutral pieces that I could mix and match with things that were already in my wardrobe to give me looks that were both comfortable and fashionable. I really focused on items that I could layer that worked well with what I already had and tried to find things that I could even wear after the baby.

Some essentials that I would recommend: a great cardigan/coatigan, a statement dress or two and definitely a good pair of supportive leggings.

3- Layering & Accessories For The Win

Layering can be a really winning combination, especially in your last trimester when your body is always vacillating between hot and cold (at least mine is). It also helps elevate a good outfit to a great outfit. The same holds true for accessories. The right accessories can take your outfit from boring to exciting. The best thing is that neither takes a lot of effort.

When layering- again, focus on neutral items that will take you through to the end of your pregnancy and could also be used beyond. A great trench coat, jacket or cardigan, a nice skirt or trousers with an adjustable waist or surplice dresses with belts all work great for layering.

In terms of accessories, don’t overdo it. Keep it to one or two great statement pieces. Remember to be careful when picking out rings since unexpected swelling could make them difficult to put on or remove once they’re on.

A bonus tip is not to forget footwear. Yes, I know that most of us can’t wear our regular shoes, especially the nice heels while we’re expecting. However, you can still find really stylish footwear options that are both supportive and comfortable.

When picking shoes for pregnancy, remember that our gait changes as our center of gravity shifts, so go for shoes that offer lots of support (Birkenstocks are great for this), are comfortable, and reduce the risk of unexpected falls. Unfortunately, now is not the time for those super espadrille wedges but rest assured, you’ll return to them in a few short months.
